New Techniquest Exhibit Highlights the Impact of Compound Semiconductors on Everyday Life

A new interactive exhibit designed to showcase the role of compound semiconductors in everyday life has officially launched at Techniquest in Cardiff Bay, offering visitors a hands-on opportunity to explore one of the UK’s most innovative technology sectors.

Developed by Whitefire Associates Ltd. with support from the UKRI Strength in Places Fund (SiPF) and the South Wales Compound Semiconductor Placed Based  Impact  and Accelerator Award (SWCS PBIAA), the exhibit demonstrates how compound semiconductors are transforming industries and helping to tackle some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

Through a series of engaging interactive activities, visitors can discover how compound semiconductor technologies enable a wide range of applications, from renewable energy generation and electric vehicles to advanced satellite imaging and mapping systems. The exhibit aims to make complex scientific concepts accessible while highlighting the vital role these materials play in modern society.

The launch event brought together representatives from CSconnected partner organisations, industry leaders, educators, and local families. The gathering celebrated a shared commitment to increasing public awareness of the South Wales compound semiconductor cluster and inspiring future generations to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Located in one of Wales’ leading science discovery centres, the exhibit is expected to reach a significant audience. With more than 30,000 school pupils visiting Techniquest each year, it will provide a valuable platform for showcasing cutting-edge innovation and highlighting the diverse career opportunities available within the compound semiconductor sector.

The initiative reflects the growing importance of South Wales as a global hub for compound semiconductor research, development and manufacturing, while helping young people understand how advanced technologies are shaping a more sustainable and connected future.
