New Call Launches for Study into Diversity Barriers in Semiconductor Workforce

A new funding call has been launched inviting proposals for a pilot study aimed at addressing diversity challenges within the semiconductor research workforce.

The initiative is led collaboratively by REWIRE‑IKC, the National Epitaxy Facility, CHIMES‑IKC, and The Compound Semiconductor Manufacturing Hub for a Sustainable Future. Together, the partners are seeking to commission an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) study that will identify barriers to participation and progression across the sector.

The study will focus on understanding the factors that limit the recruitment, retention, and long-term progression of diverse talentwithin semiconductor-related technical roles. These roles span a broad spectrum of activities, including theory, design, modelling, fabrication, and characterisation, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of the field.

Researchers selected through the call will be tasked with generating robust, evidence-based insights into the structural and cultural challenges facing the workforce. The aim is not only to analyse existing issues, but to develop practical recommendations and interventions that can drive meaningful and lasting change across the semiconductor ecosystem.

Organisers подчеркнули that improving diversity is increasingly recognised as essential to strengthening innovation, resilience, and global competitiveness within the semiconductor sector. By broadening participation and supporting a more inclusive workforce, the initiative aims to unlock a wider pool of skills and perspectives.

The call is open to individuals and teams with expertise in EDI research, workforce development, and related disciplines, offering an opportunity to contribute to a strategically important area for the UK’s advanced technology landscape.
