Work is underway to bring specialist semiconductor training to a wider audience, as Storm+Shelter filmed with Cardiff University’s Naresh Kumar to convert Introduction to Etching for Semiconductor Manufacturing course into a fully online format.
The course, developed by Cardiff University’s Professional Development Unit in partnership with CSconnected, has been designed to provide industry‑relevant knowledge in semiconductor processing. The move to digital delivery is expected to significantly broaden access, enabling both professionals in the sector and those seeking to enter it to benefit from flexible learning.
Filming for the online version took place this week, marking a key step in transforming the programme into a scalable resource for skills development across the semiconductor ecosystem.
The course focuses on etching processes, a critical stage in semiconductor manufacturing used to define microscale and nanoscale device structures. By making this technical training more accessible, the initiative aims to support workforce development in a sector that is experiencing rapid growth and increasing demand for skilled talent.
The programme has been supported through funding from the South Wales Compound Semiconductor Impact Accelerator (PBIAA), reflecting wider efforts to strengthen the talent pipeline within the UK’s semiconductor industry.
The online format will help remove barriers to entry, allowing learners from a broader range of backgrounds and locations to gain foundational knowledge in semiconductor manufacturing. This aligns with ongoing initiatives across South Wales to expand training opportunities and support reskilling into high‑value technology roles.
