The Institute for Compound Semiconductors (ICS) has established a world-class compound semiconductor research and small scale manufacturing facility. Available to all on an Open Access basis, the ICS provides a platform for fabrication on wafers up to 200mm in diameter where researchers and industry can work together to progress academic research to a point where it can be translated reliably and quickly into the production environment. Part of Cardiff University, the ICS aims to be the UK facility of choice with worldwide recognition for stimulating, facilitating and enabling CS research.

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) has provided £4.1 million through the Place Based Impact Acceleration Account (PBIAA) totackle the skilled labor shortage in South Wales’ semiconductor cluster. The funding focuses on: upskilling current employees, training newcomers to the industry and inspiring career interest in the field. This grant supports initiatives that enhance the cluster, leading to job creation, skills development, private investment, and growth of small and medium enterprises, while also promoting collaboration between academia and local businesses in line with theg overnment’s “levelling up” agenda.

Physics, the professional body and learned society for physics in the UK and Ireland. The Semiconductor Physics Group is a forum for industrial and university researchers interested in the physics, preparation and application of semiconducting materials, nanostructures and devices. The group organises and supports conferences and events related to semiconductors and also organises competitions and awards for PhD students in the field, including the annual group PhD thesis prize and the Phil Buckle Research Communication Competition. IOP special interest groups are open to all IOP members and joining an IOP special interest group will help you meet, network and collaborate with your peers. For more information, see the Group website: https://www.iop.org/physics-community/special-interest-groups/semiconductor-physics-group
Our vision is to establish the UK as the primary global research and manufacturing hub for Compound Semiconductor (CS) Technologies, expanding and extending the CS Cluster that our previous EPSRC Manufacturing Hub initiated. The CS Hub will create and expand UK wide excellence and impact in CS by delivering a scientific lead, developing sustainable processes and combining and connecting UK research excellence with the best translational facilities. We will work with companies and centres of excellence across the UK to support the whole UK CS industry and industry users of CSs. The combined activity will provide a path from enabling fundamental research through wafer, device and integrated chip manufacturing research into prototyping, reliability testing and system qualification at the CS Catapult and partner companies; to create the most innovative products and the most sustainable manufacturing processes.
