In June, delegates from the Compound Semiconductor Applications (CSA) Catapult visited the Institute for Compound Semiconductors at Cardiff University for a bespoke practical cleanroom training course funded through the PBIAA programme and facilitated by Cardiff University’s Professional Development Unit.
Delivered by Dr Chenguang Wang, the programme combined classroom-based learning with extensive hands-on training, providing participants with a comprehensive introduction to semiconductor device manufacturing processes. Throughout the course, delegates gained practical experience in wafer preparation, optical lithography, metal deposition, etching, wire bonding, device fabrication and testing.
The training offered a unique opportunity for participants to develop technical expertise while gaining valuable insight into the complete semiconductor manufacturing workflow, from initial processing through to device characterisation.
By combining theoretical knowledge with practical cleanroom experience, the programme helped equip attendees with the advanced skills required to support research, innovation and industrial growth within the UK’s expanding compound semiconductor sector.
The course reflects the ongoing commitment of Cardiff University, the Institute for Compound Semiconductors, PBIAA and industry partners to developing the highly skilled workforce needed to drive future technological advances and maintain the UK’s position as a global leader in compound semiconductor technologies.
