New Training Programme Launched to Support Entry into Semiconductor Sector

A new initiative aimed at helping professionals transition into the rapidly growing semiconductor industry has been launched by Cardiff University’s Professional Development Unit, in partnership with CSconnected.

The three‑day “Pathway into Semiconductors” programme is designed to support individuals looking to reskill or pivot their careers into the sector, particularly those with engineering backgrounds. The course offers an introduction to key concepts, technologies, and career pathways within the semiconductor ecosystem, with a focus on the needs of the South Wales compound semiconductor cluster.

Organisers say the programme is suited to a wide range of engineering disciplines, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of semiconductor technologies, which span materials science, electronics, photonics, and advanced manufacturing.

A major feature of the initiative is that the course is fully funded for eligible applicants, making it accessible to individuals seeking to upskill without financial barriers. This aligns with broader efforts to address skills shortages and build a strong talent pipeline for the UK’s semiconductor industry.

The launch comes at a time of growing demand for skilled workers in semiconductors, driven by expansion in areas such as quantum technologies, electric vehicles, telecommunications, and advanced sensing systems.

By combining academic expertise with industry insight from CSconnected, the programme aims to equip participants with both foundational knowledge and practical awareness of opportunities within the sector.

The organisers encourage interested applicants to register early, as demand for places is expected to be high.
